Graffiti Rock was a hip-hop based television program, originally screened June 29, 1984. Intended as an on-going series,the show only received one pilot episode and aired on WPIX channel 11 in New York City and a few other markets.The pilot episode has since been released as a DVD and features rare extra material.
Graffiti Rock resembled a hip hop version of the popular television dance shows at the time such as Soul Train and American Bandstand. The show was created and hosted by Michael Holman, who was the manager of the popular break-dancing crew, the New York City Breakers.The episode features Run D.M.C., Shannon, The New York City Breakers, DJ Jimmie Jazz and Kool Moe Dee and Special K of the Treacherous Three. The New York City Breakers,who were fresh off of their success from the movie, Beat Street, made a showcase appearance. One of the funniest graff/hiphop broadcasts ever!!

On Monday the 2nd of May 2011, 7 international artists headed to Koge in Denmark to collaborate on our European foundation project hosted by Ground Release. Talents hailed from the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Denmark, Germany and the United States. We are proud to present and integrate one of the most dynamic groups worldwide and expose their joint work to the globe, all the artist had a chance to plan and process all stages of the work that was produced. The artists were presented with a substantial wall space of 300m2 painted black, they soon started planning and applying the base of their background with high-pressure industrial sprayers and selective roller paint colours. Equipped with diesel powered scissor lifts they were able to coat the whole wall before painting on top. Three days later some next level work was produced by the whole team!!

Welcome to Portobello Square, the new £350million development currently being built in Ladbroke Grove. The redevelopment of the area will take up to 12 years to be completed, and on completion will bring 141 private homes, and 174 ”affordable homes” to the area, as well as a large number of retail outlets. The scheme has already come under fire from residents as 1700 of them have been forced to relocate to allow this work to take place, not to mention local business worried at the prospects of larger companies muscling in on an already fragile balance of retail in the area. Lets hope that Kensington and Chelsea council have taken this into consideration and aren’t just being taken for an expensive ride by developers. Ladbroke Grove should be known for its culture, music and markets, and not for its chain stores and expensive penthouses. Thankfully, for the time being it looks like graffiti still has a home in Ladbroke Grove …..as long as we stick to the rules.

Somewhere in the heart of Gravesend lies a place called Denton. This imaginary town is a specialist training centre for the metropolitan police, and also home to an entire life sized mock tube station complete with platforms and vandalised trains.
The station is used to teach police how to handle public disturbances, or to be precise, an offence that involves a person or people engaging in behavior which causes an unreasonable nuisance to others. Now I wonder if graffiti falls into this category, and if so, who do they employ to test the police? Personally, I’d fancy our chances if given the opportunity, just as long as they don’t bring the chopper.

KEEP THE FAITH: ISSUE 2

We managed to get an exclusive chat with the brains behind Keep The Faith Magazine as they prepare to launch the highly anticipated second issue… Everyone got pretty excited earlier on in the week with that KTF x Bones preview video… The magazine looks to be just as real..

So without further ado. May I introduce Frank and Holmesy.

First thing first - Who’s the chick in the balaclava, and whats her number?

Holmesy: That’s no chick. That’s a shapeshifting lizard girl.

Frank: Ha ha ha, yeah a lizard girl called Katie Fenwick. Or Katie F as we call her. I’d pass on her number, but I doubt her cage wrestler husband would be very happy. (Serious).

What is Keep The Faith anyway, and why would we want to read it?

F: Keep The Faith is a graffiti magazine produced in London with the sole purpose of giving a platform to the the hardcore side of the culture - primarily London-based stuff, but in this issue we’ve had contributions from around the UK and the world. So we’ve shoe-horned a few of those in. The mag gives a small insight into what goes on in and around London train-wise, and it also features well written editorial stuff that you can actually sit down and have a read of. When I was younger that was one of the things I always thought was crucially important to a graf mag - words are as important as the pictures, especially stuff you can go back to again and again. Makes it a more worthwhile purchase.

H: You don’t want to read it. You NEED to read it.

Who’s bright idea was it to start KTF?

H: It was him. He did it. And I hate to be left out of anything so I jumped all over it. I’m just a disillusioned old pervert. I can’t answer for him.

F: Ha ha, yeah it was me. I’m a glutton for graf and even more of a glutton for punishment. I’m a comic book vigilante.

What can we expect to see in this issue?

H: No girls. Sadly. Just a tonne of full bleed, exclusively massive pictures of trains. And some words. Good words.

F: Yeah man, we had to dump the girls…literally. I made the painful “It’s not you, it’s me” phone calls, dealt with the tears and suicide attempts and then took full advantage of the low self-esteem we’d inflicted. But you can expect to see more girl-based shit on the blog in the future, don’t worry about that. Leaving the chicks out gave us space to put in even more steel, there are 64 pages worth - I’d say 99% haven’t been published anywhere else, although there are a couple of bits that may have been elsewhere. We interviewed Mear, a London stalwart who’s been slept on a fair bit. We’ve done a little thing about custodial sentences, there’s a selection of stuff from foreign contributors, a tunnels feature with some never-seen-before shots of a famous tube plot and shitloads of tubes and BRs, oldish and new.

But here at Plastic Bones we love stencils and street art, why is there none of that in your publication?

H: We had some trouble getting hold of any stencil artists. They’re renowned for keeping their shit on lock when it comes to flicks and nobody wanted their identity compromised. Well, we wouldn’t give them a 12-page spread with a load of wall flicks, so they all fucked off in tears, low slung jeans and silly haircuts between their legs.

F: Yeah man, like Holmesy said, we tried to get hold of some of these elusive Banksy types, but they seem to be completely against the concept of promoting themselves and using what little, if any, experience they have of graffiti to blag themselves commissions and gallery shows. Hardcore.

Why make a magazine when blogs are the more instant way of seeing graff nowadays?

H: Everybody is blogging. Not to take anything away from it - we do it ourselves - but there aren’t too many physical, hardcopy UK magazines out there… which I, personally, miss. We’ve both had a hand in producing fanzines and magazines before this and thought it was about time the UK got another.

F: Blogs are cool, but magazines and books are what helped to spread this culture around the globe. I wrote a dissertation on the internet VS printed media and graffiti in the streets about 8 years ago. The conclusion then is still relevant now - blogs are ok, but kinda disposable, but the streets, tracks and trains are where the truth is at. Mags and books offer a very small, skewed insight into what’s going on and serve as a permanent record of stuff that’s been done. End of the day, I prefer to hold something in my hands than go online and browse blogs/Flickr/whatever.

Some magazines look fucking awful. Yours looks pro.. you lot aint professional designers are ya?

F: We’re more than designers, we’re trained, qualified multimedia one-man fucking armies who work our bollocks off on a daily basis for very little reward.

H: Designers are wankers. Nah mate, not us. We use a dusty BBC Micro and Letraset.

What the formula for a good graf magazine anyways?

F: Still trying to work that one out… I’ve got a fucking huge magazine and book collection which has definitely fed into my subconscious and helped to create the magazine we’ve published. A good, solid but basic layout is very important - photos need to breathe and have their own space. And, like I’ve already said, CONTENT. Good written content. Bog standard interviews are not the one anymore, Overground and the like have taken writer case studies to a new level. We need to start stepping up and proving that graffiti writers have a voice: a socially-aware, relevant and articulate voice. And high quality paper and colour reproduction are also paramount.

H: Tits and panels. Some words.

Whats does the future hold for Keep the Faith?

F: When I first came up with the idea it was literally to do a one-off mag to lift everyone’s spirits during a real dark time for graffiti in London. Now we’re on to issue 2, with a DVD in the works, t-shirts and fuck knows what else. Everytime we have a little brainstorming meeting at KTF Towers something new crops up. Cheesy to say it, but the future of the magazine and whatnot is entirely dependant on the people in the scene supporting us by contributing, helping us to promote our stuff and actually BUYING it too.

H: What began as maybe a one-off project seems to be morphing into a million other offshoots. I can’t give you any details just yet… but watch this space and the blog for news and how to help out. And we’ll need everyone’s help along the way. On a more serious note - I’m a bit taken aback by what’s going on.

Issue 1 sold over 900 copies around the world, were you pleased with yourselves?

H: Damn fucking right. That’s better than sales of Men Only. (true story)

F: Of course, and they’re still selling now, a year on - I just sent a load out to Miami and they’ve already sold out so they’ve asked for another 10. When you’ve put you heart and soul into something and the response is as good as it has been from all over the world, then it’s a good feeling. But something I haven’t had time to really sit down and take in. It made all those marathon tracks to the post office, with a bag that weighs a tonne, worthwhile.

How do you feel about the current state of the UK graf scene?

F: I think there’s a lot of room for improvement. And I think we all have a hand in making those improvements, in particular the older generation need to make time to pass on their knowledge and skills to the younger generation. Too many old writers moan that graf is shit these days but they don’t make any contribution to making it better. If there were burners along the tracks then younger writers might be inspired to put more effort in to what they do.

H: I can’t answer this.

2011 has seen a lot of runners so far, and the buff is looking slack - what do you think is going on?

H: That’ll be our elite team of porn models we placed in key positions in the buff-squad, keeping the guys busy so we can get shots for the magazine. That or the pre-2012 lull.

F: Cool Cameron is the new king of the First Capital Line. Trust me, we got sources high up in the Government.

What’s your opinion on the graf custodials being handed out recently?

H: It’s a load of garbage. I remember a time when you were looking at no more than a few hundred quid damage per panel - now they ramp it up, regardless of the damage, until you’re in the £5k custody tariff and looking at jail. Every time. It’s wack as fuck. I’m not saying people shouldn’t be punished for breaking a law, but look at it in perspective. It’s painting. Nothing more. Though, we live in a country that puts cameras in bins and has court cases for bunking the train… so what should we really expect?

F: It’s never a good thing. It’s bad for the writers, their families, their friends, taxpayers and it’s typical of so-called “British justice” - capitalist laws that value property more than human life. It’s bullshit, and we’ve actually touched on that in a feature in issue 2 of the mag. There’ll be more on this on the blog as it goes, seriously, the truth will out.

Any advice to our readers about being careful on blogs/Facebook etc..

H: If you want to keep it quiet, keep it off your machine. Facebook is bait and monitored. As is your email. As is everything. Trust me on this, it’s a steep learning curve.

F: Do what you like innit, if you’re dumb enough to think you won’t get caught then go ahead and put your bait flicks online. Modern graffiti as we know it has been around for how long now? Almost 50 years and people still don’t keep their shit tight? All the advice writers need is already out there and most of it is common sense.

So…When can we expect this mag to come out, and where are we gonna be able to buy it?

F: SOON COME. You’ll be able to get it through our website, www.keepthefaithmagazine.com. Also Chrome & Black and various stockists across the country and the world. We’ll have a little list of stockists up on the site very soon actually, so watch this space.

H: After hiccup and mishap after hiccup and mishap - we send to print this week!

MARINA BAY SANDS..

We have been seeing photos pop up all over the net of this place, so we decided investigate further. Turns out that this is the Marina Bay Sands Hotel in Singapore. It was due to open in 2009, but was delayed thanks to labour and material shortages, and funding problems due to the global financial crisis.

The infinity pool on the roof is in the ‘SkyPark’ which spans the three towers of the hotel. The platform itself is longer than the Eiffel tower laid down and is one of the largest of its kind in the world.

The Marina Sands resort was designed by architect Moshe Safdie who based it on a deck of cards. Inside shoppers can ride along an indoor canal in Sampan boats styled on traditional Chinese vessels from the 17th century.

The owners have also commissioned five well-known artists to create works of art to ‘integrate’ with the buildings. Among these is a 40m-long Antony Gormley sculpture made from 16,100 steel rods. The whole thing weighs 14.8 tons and it took 60 people to assemble it in the hotel.

I think we know where the next PB vacation will be.

This cap has been specially made to be worn by a Rastafarian member of staff working for London Underground Limited. The crown is much bigger than the regular cap size to accommodate the dreadlock hair. It also has a much smaller upturned fabric peak. The Rastafarian movement originated in Ethiopia, but is closely associated with Jamaican people. Rastafarians wear their hair long in dreadlocks, which also have religious significance. Large hats have been devised to tuck away the hair. This style of hat is a ‘crown’ hat.”

WHAT A WASTE OF PAINT…

Back in 2008, South African artfag Robin Rhode along with 10 assistants decided to paint South Bank chrome in the name of street art (sorry was just sick in my mouth). He then proceeded to paint horrible ‘geometric’ patterns using various shapes and sizes of stencil. This angered us then, and it still angers us to this day. This absolute disregard for our rapidly diminishing legal spots is totally unacceptable. What the fuck was this guy thinking?

”My idea for the project is to create an optic environment using layered geometric forms that are sprayed directly onto the wall through a stencil. These forms will animate the environment, particularly for the skateboarders moving through the space.” explains Robin Rhode…

Personally, we at PB think this type of behavior is disgusting and wasteful. And if we had enough chrome to cover South Bank entirely (410 meters squared to be precise), It would’ve have been straight down Paddington tracks thank you very much…

Just shows you what a bad effect the mainstream can have on a culture, no integrity, understanding or quality just straight up sales tactics. Regardless, here at PB HQ we have got a copy and well on our way to mastering the centipede and the king tut. We have had trouble with the backspins and believe these kids are attached to revolving discs in the ground implanted by the company. swear down.

So last night we headed to Notting Hill to catch the long overdue UK premier of Wholetrain. The Last time I was at the Notting Hill arts club was DJIQ’s live from the sofa launch….I Spent two hours in the queue worming my way to the front. Finally sneaked in to catch the end of Jehst and Kashmere. Drank too much absinthe and had to be dragged out by bouncers for catching a reach…Tonight on the other hand was a different story.

The night drew a pretty decent crowd, nice to see a few ladies there too….I know what you’re thinking, why would girls get tarted up to watch a movie about painting trains? Anyway, a couple drinks and couple tunes later the crowd and I tuned into what can only be described as a pretty fucking decent graffiti movie. Deal sealed. Given what the British public have been exposed to in the past when graffiti is used as a plot-line in any given television drama we would be forgiven for approaching the screening with a certain amount of trepidation however I was pleasantly surprised.

You see Wholetrain was made by people who know their onions. It’s a film about graffiti rather than a film about youth culture with graffiti crow-barred into the plot (e.g. the Wackness, One Eight Seven etc.). Producers take note - When you bring in a writer who knows what he’s doing to help support the cast and crew, it’s hard to go wrong. And these lot didn’t.

Special mention’s to Neon, Won, Cemnoz, Pure and Ciel for all the sprays. Gold stars all round.

And many thanks to Notting Hill Arts Club and the organisers for putting on the event.

In an attempt to put a smile on the moody commuters of the big smoke, Check out the creative intermission on the stations below between 17th and 28th January.

“We’re going to beat the January blues with our showcase of film, art and animation. The films will be displayed on digital platform screens across the stations on weekday mornings and evenings during the rush hour commute.” Smile for London.

Project brief : Create a piece of animation, moving image or film for the CBSO screens with the ultimate aim of inspiring, exciting or amusing Londoners as they make their way into work. You are encouraged to really push the boundaries whilst keeping the message positive and inoffensive [obviously - don't make Monday worse than it already is!]. Take into consideration that there is no audio – so you should be able to draw an audience with visuals alone.

This is one step closer to TV screens being integrated in trains and on platforms, they will be playing a range of creative audio visual productions. As they have Vimeo and CBS network as their media partners they are bound to have some high quality bits getting played.

You might catch the new PB x Towns & Roid x China video playing out. Keep your eyes peeled.

The collective voice of disgruntled rail passengers and disheartened train employees, calling for a newly unified national rail network run for people not profit.

MISSION :

Bring Back British Rail is a new nationwide campaign : -

- An end to private interest in public transport.

- A fully integrated, publicly owned rail network, in which the passengers are always the most important stake holder.

- Consistently low priced fares and fast, request and efficient service which have the capacity to continually improve and expand in order to encourage more people to choose rail travel as a real, green alternative to their cars.

Hats off to the organisers of this potentially meaningless protest / Campaign, the UK is known for its bad transport services and its always good to see people fighting for what can only be described as what they deserve as standard. In the past 5 years the British government have tried to encourage more people to travel by train in an effort to decrease congestion in London and to decrease emissions within. Yet there has been a record increase in public transport fares across the country particularly in London. This did not co-inside with national minimum wage or inflation. Now that the oyster is fully integrated within the network they decide to bump up prices even further, the introduction of the oyster card was supposed to make things cheaper and easier now it seems like an scheme to get people using it instead of something beneficial for the public. The cost of living in London seems to be rising dramatically, I regularly travel into Central London for meetings and bullshit, before I know it i have spent £20 and get back thinking what the fuck did i spend it on. To put this in context, the national minimum wage is £5.93, I would have to work 4 hours in a shitty ass job to travel and have lunch in London.

From 2 January a single Tube journey from zone 1 to 2 (central London) on an Oyster card would rise by an average of 10p from the current £1.80.

But the cap - which is the maximum that passengers could be charged in a day - will go up by 80p for peak times from £7.20, while the off-peak price will rise by £1 to £6.60.

Travelcard prices would also rise. For instance the cost of a zone 1 to 4 travelcard will rise from £6.30 to £7.30 - an 11% increase.

Some travelcards - like the zone 2 to 6 card - will disappear meaning people who paid £5.10 for a card will now have to buy a zone 1 to 6 card for £8.

On buses and trams, single cash tickets will rise from £2 to £2.20, on Oyster this will rise by 10p from £1.20. The daily Oyster cap will increase by 10p to £4.

Looking Back - 2010..

It hardly feels like we launched Plastic Bones less than 12 months ago. As the year draws to a close we are looking back on our movements and content, realising we were lucky enough to have traveled to over 15 countries through out Europe, Asia and the States. This year we have dedicated most of our time documenting the London and international graffiti/art scene and, now with a greater following, we intend to commit ourselves to independently creating and supplying you with more exclusive content such as audio visuals, photos and interviews.

2011 is going to be a busy year for us at PB HQ. We have been laying down new structures for our relaunch in the new year, amongst other expansion plans, which will be revealed in months to come. We would like to toast to everybody contributing to the Plastic Bones movement, however big or small (to all the guys at Domino’s Pizza… thank you), and all the people that have supported and worked with us over the past year.
